give me a hand!!

I have always loved drawing with ball point pen.  It is a medium that feels like it has a life or a soul.  The same can be said for hands.  They tell you so much about a person.  No matter what you do to a face to make it look younger, you can always tell a person's age from their hands.  These are mine.  They are the soul of my body.  I can not imagine my life with out them!  A little note.  I totally misspelled "hands" at first and forgot to leave space for the "s"...I love the solution!  lol

I used to hate zombie movies.  I hate scary movies.  I think the real world is scary enough.  That changed about 7 years ago when I saw this amazing Can Festival entry called "cargo" on you tube.  The short film was so good I started showing it to my students as "an art film"...I don't show it any more.   Then one of my students decided to showcase "the walking dead" as his subject for his semester project zig zag book.  I asked him questions and told him about my dislike of zombies.  He challenged me to watch just one episode of the "walking dead".  In my ever attempt to connect with my kiddos, I sat down and watched the first two episodes and.....I was hooked.  It was well written, not as gory as I thought it would be (actually, it was pretty gory).  I had to know what happened to Rick Grimes!  Now, I have a page in my journal dedicated to "the walking dead".  Here are some choices I made.  I used red paint, of course....

page 11 There is beauty even in death

I have already talked about the passing of my mentor, Donna Rae Harris.  I had the great privilege of knowing her even in my adult life.  She was my high school teacher.  I pretty much do in my class what she taught me in her class.  She made herself a bridge for the young artist in her classes to become adult artist after they graduated.  Every time I went to her home to visit, there were students who still visited her from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's!  She loved us all and we loved her back.  We are her legacy.  I am grateful to her family for letting me be there at her passing.  She was in and out while I got to sit with her.  The last time she woke up while I was there, she was sort of surprised and said "thank you for being here...Next time, I'll do something for you!"  I laughed and told her that she already had done something for me and that was why I was sitting there.  She was 92 years old and still doing art!...

Page 13 Is she for real?!

This is one of those rare times when there is already something in the book that you really want to keep in the book.  The title of this chapter was "is she for real?!"  I planned and saved this space just so I could use the title in one of my pages.  Humans have been looking for mermaids since the discovery in San Francisco and look what we have!  A Mermaid!  ...but...Wait!  is she for real?  I don't know where the octopus got the parts but he's made himself some bait for his next dinner.  Maybe its bits and pieces of his last meal.  Someone better notice the stitching down her side and the watery "hey boys!" isn't coming from her!!  I love this page!!!
